VAXTHANGIAN-ARANIAN

This was a princely house in Artsakh (Karabakh), founded by prince Vaxthang Aranian (Aranshahik). The ancestors of the latter were the descendants of Patriarch Aran, the offspring of Hayk the Projenitor, and had ruled for a long time over the eastern lands of Armenia (on the right bank of the Kur river), while another branch of the Aranshahiks ruled over Aghvank (the Albanian kingdom of the East). Beginning with the 11th to 12th centuries the Armenian house of the Aranian Aranshahiks began to split into several branches, each possessing hereditary power over one of the demesnes (gavars) of the Artsakh (later Xachen) and Utiq provinces. Thus were formed the Armenian princely dynasties of the Vaxthangians of Middle Xachen, the Dophians of Upper Xachen and Hasan-Jalalians of Lower Xachen, all of whom were blood relatives and kept their kinship by means of dynastic marriages.

In the 11th to 13th centuries the Middle Xachen principality, situated in the midstream of Tartar within the modern boundaries of the western part of the Martakert region of Nagorno-Karabakh, was under the hereditary rule of the Vaxthangian family, and Hatherq was the administrative center of the principality. In their domain the Vaxthangians were engaged in active construction of religious and secular sites (such as the church of Xada or Geghamiji, the town of Mayraqaghaq, a certain number of castles in the Tharthar valley and others). However, at the beginning of the 13th century the Vaxthangian house merged into the house of the Dophians of Tzar in Upper Xachen, and their lands went under the control of the latters. After this the descendants of the Vaxthangians remained influential in the religious sphere. Several members of the Vaxthangian family were superiors of the monasteries around Hatherq and Vaguhas regions and in other parts of medieval Armenia.
