Jewish ancestors of dvorenins Zhilins were brought to Lithuania from Zilina(Zhilina) in Slovakia by crusaders. So they have adopted the surname Zhilin and set up their village Zilinai(Zhilins) in Lithuania.Later they have lithuanized their surname into Zilinskas(Zhilinsky),Zilenas, and Zilionis. Zhilinsky is also indicated in this website.

It was passed down orally from generation to generation that our Zhilin(Zilenas,Zilionis) family originated in Oshmena(former Lithuanian town), from where they spread to all directions. The dictionary of Jewish surnames also indicates that the surname Zhilin originated from the lake Zhili in Oshmena,Belarus.
The most famous member of this family is the COMPOSER OF ROMANCES ALEKSEY ZHILIN 1767-1848. HE HAD HIS FIRST SON TAMOSHIUS from his first wife. Tamoshius' descendants live in Lithuania under the surname Zilionis and their genealogical scheme is made.
ALEKSEY'S SECOND SON DMITRY is described in the story "The prisoner of Caucasus" by L.Tolstoy. Majority of Dmitry's descendants live in Lithuania under the surname Zilionis and their genealogical table is made. However, one Dmitry's son Konstantin stayed in Timsk of Kursk province. Very likely, Konstantin's greatgrandson is a general-historian Vitaly Zhilin, because he also was born in Timsk. There is another general-historian Pavel Zhilin, but his relationship is unknown.
THE THIRD SON OF ALEKSEY ALSO WAS ALEKSEY, whose son Aleksandr (1880) was a professor of Kiev university.
My email: asevicz@hotmail.com
